Choice-GB Backbone and Managed Switches?

I have a choice between setting up a Switched GB backbone or setting up managed switches and using VLANs to manage the bandwidth. I’m leaning toward the GB since I can do it cheaper and I figure with GB speed there’s no way I need to worry about VLANs or management on the switches.

I need opinions.
