compaq win xp usb bootup

hiya, i have a win xp px that wont bootup from the usb. is there anything i can do to make it work? please help!also, is there a way other than using a special external connecter to change an old laptop harddrive into a hd that can go into my pc and work? a way to switch between then?? thanks!!
