Complicated Employment Status

My company is currently moving its Help Desk to another country and will be laying off all agents within the department. However they are hiring consultants to keep the customer service flow operational as agents leave the department or organization. Would it be feasible to take the package being offered and apply to be hired as a consultant. My thinking on this is, I already have years of experience with the organization, and would like to build a reputation with outside consulting agencies. The department is being transitioned moving within the next 9 months. Your response is anticipated.
