config usb floppy on debian linux laptop

ive installed debian 2.2.7 on my sony vaio picturebook. ive got pretty much everything working great except my usb floppy isnt recognised. does anyone know the procedure for correcting this. i know MAKEDEV comes into play, but im not sure if debian even realises the harwares there. any suggestions??
