Configuring multiple websites

by obiwaynekenobi . Updated 21 years, 7 months ago

I feel really ashamed to ask this because my degree is in network adminitration, but this is my first real IT job…

My company already hosts one website, and I am designing a second one for them. I want to put it on the server, but keep it private for the moment, so only the managers can view it and give feedback. I added the site to IIS on the server (we’re running SBS 2003 Premium) but the only way I can view the site is through http://localhost, which of course won’t work on a remote machine.

In order for another PC to view it, I have to configure an IP address for it and have then the DNS server point to the site (I tried giving it an IP address but DNS doesn’t resolve it and I get the “Cannot find server or DNS error” error.). I can deny anonymous access to keep it private until it’s ready to go into production.

The problem here is that I don’t know how to add an IP address and configure the DNS Server (which is the same as the web server) to resolve it to the web folder; I’ve never done any real work setting DNS up before. I would greatly appreciate any help.. like I said, I feel kind of stupid asking something this simple, but I’m still learning.
