Connecting laptop to desktop printer

Trying to print from laptop via my desktop printer.

I have a Win XP laptop with a VPN internet connection and am trying to connect it to my Win 2000 DSL connection HP OfficeJet printer. Tried to download HP software to laptop but it would not accept it. Tried connecting laptop to desktop via USB printer adapter but that doesn’t work. Any suggestions?
