Consulting or work for someone

O.k. I made it through the 2nd wave of workforce reduction. Will I make it for the next one in September. Is the Economy that bad that an IT specialist has to stay within an org that doesn’t challenge you. I guess to start is to look into consulting companies and take it from there.
