create timetable in excell

I know that creating a timetable is easy in excell,however a lecturer wishes to be able to accumulate the number of hours that each module is tought. He changes the schedule on a weekly basis, dependent on staff and student availability.
My question is how can he develop a running total in a cell for everytime he writes in a module description?
