Custom maps web application, pre-made service or from scratch?

First off, sorry for wording the title so horridly.

What I mean is that I want to make a very custom map based application(think uber mobile app), with the google maps API, but I’m not sure if I should try to build it from scratch fully with my own custom code or if there’s is some existing service, like wordpress, that could host my application?
