Daily Server Shutdown and Reliability

We have an ongoing discussion between management and the local computer techs concerning shutting down office computers and the NT server every night and weekend. We are located in Florida (warm humid climate) with the air conditioning operating only during business hours. The server has a smart UPS power supply to shut down safely in the event of a power outage. How does daily shutdown and start-up affect reliability, service life and loss of data?
