data retrieval software

Hi- I am putting together a training class for students from different businesses but primarily accounting background on data retrieval. I plan to use Access and show them how to query info from Access and also how to create queries using Excel. I would like to add at least one other query software as a demo. Any suggestions- I wanted to do crystal reports but it is too expensive. Also, if I opt to use a different database program besides or in addition to Access, any suggestions. This is business oriented for non tech people. All help is appreciated.
