Database development

Does anyone know what the future holds for Database development (software)? I’m looking to icrease my knowledge in this field and don’t know what the current and anticipated openings are leaning towards. What should I start to develop? I see a lot of openings with Oracle, DB2. What are the companies using right now? Will some of these be phased out in the future? Thanks for any info in this field.
