Dell Dimension 4550 Shuts Down

I have a dell dimension 4550 that worked perfect up until a few days ago when it refused to acknowledge the presence of a HDD and shuts down automatically after a minute. I tried booting from a CD and it won’t get past the Dell loading screen. What is the matter with this thing?
