Dell Inspiron 8000; Windows XP install; Black Screen

My wife bought a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop off of eBay. It arrived with Windows ME on it so I upgraded it to Windows XP. The install went fine and completed, but upon final restart,, I get the Dell Screen then the Widows screen, then nothing but a black, blank screen. I can hear noises when I hit keys, but I can’t see what I am doing.

I deleted all partitions, reformatted and did a fresh install. Three times.

Anyone have any clue as to what my problem is?
