Dell Inspiron B120 desktop stalls

Hi, Can anyone suggest a fix for this?
Often, but not always, my laptop seems to boot normally and then stall when the desktop appears. (The desktop looks normal but after a few clicks I get an error beep and the cursor freezes.)
Sometimes I have to reboot 5/6 times, sometimes it loads correctly.
