Demotion Of Additional DC

Hi all

I have one 2003 domain controller (DC) and 2003 additional domain controller(ADC) and I have to demte the ADC with out distrubing the existing setup. when I execute the command DCPROMO on the ADC it says it cant communicate with the DC Can anybody help me out how do I go about demoting the ADC?
