“Denial of Service” Attacks

Micorsoft’s sites were down for awhile yesterday due to a “denial of service” attack wherein hackers flood the sites with bogus requests for information thereby flooding routers.

Are there any preventative measures for these kinds of attacks? Or is this one of the Net’s achilles heels that will continue to keep an organization at risk and vulnerable?
