direct dial up ! protocol???

i am running both laptop and desktop on win2k o/s, i have set up a direct dial for access from laptop to host (desktop) using protocol (tcp/ip ) i have enabled file and print sharing for microsoft networks and client for microsoft networks, the connection doesnt seem as good as a vpn connection which i was a bit surprised,i would be grateful for any input on this,——–cheers!
