display custom attribute in gal?

I changed custom attribute 1 in ds site configuration to pager. Now, it shows up for all the recepients as such, in exchange administrator, in the recipient container. Now I want it to show up in the global address list when a user selects the properties of a recepient. Currently no custom attributes show up in the GAL. How do I get this to appear in the GAL?
