Document Imaging

When I try to open a Microsoft Document Imaging file, I get the following message:

A component of the application is missing. Please reinstall application.

I have tried to do this repeatedly with no success using the methods found elsewhere via change or repair of Microsoft Office XP Small Business. I’m stumped. Please advise how I can retrieve these documents!
