domain security

Network Solutions sold my domain name after I had paid GoDaddy.com to host it before it expired with Network Solutions. I have been unable to resolve the issue, since I have had to change my domain name (which happened to be my name). What is the solution in this matter? How secure are our domain names? How can I get another domain away from Network Solutions, which makes doing so virtually impossible (as they sell it to a reseller even when you’ve registered it elsewhere)? Thank you.
