Dude, Where’s My Web!

I’m leaving this job for a much better one in a few days, but I really want to iron out this annoying wrinkle that’s cropped up on a client’s machine.

After a repair installation of XP, it no longer wants to play nicely with the network it’s on. It connects through a wireless access point which is directly connected to a DHCP-enabled router.

There seem to be two problems which may or may not be related. The first problem is that it won’t pick up a dynamically-assigned IP address from the router (all the other machines will), and the second is that even when I assign a static IP address (which it obviously needs to access other objects on the network) and manually assign two DNS server addresses for their ISP, it won’t resolve domain names. It can ping the IP addresses of off-site web servers, but not resolve the names.

So I don’t know if this is a router problem or a DNS problem, even though it’s almost certainly just a problem with that machine, since all the others work fine, and are quite capable of picking up addresses from the router and resolving domain names.

Gah…come Friday evening this won’t be my problem any more, but I really want to get it sorted.
