DVD/CD-RW can read CDs but not DVDs

Can anybody help me. I have a Dell latitude D610 laptop which is working fine until a few days ago when i was trying to play a DVD. the DVD/CD-RW can read CDs but not DVDs. Can anyone offer some assistance on how to solve this problem. It is running Windows XP SP2
