DVD playback in Laptop PC

Acer laptop,WinXPSP2, Celeron CPU with 1GB ram.
using WinDVD to play DVD

I notice when a DVD is paused that the disc stops spinning after qbout 10 seconds. Play only resumes after a delay and some stuttering. What can I change to ensure a smooth transition from Pause to Play. I have experimented with different hardware acceleration values and different performance settings to no avail.
