Editing 2007 PowerPoint Y and X axis data in a chart or graph

I have a Chart created in PowerPoint 2007 sent to me. For some reason I cannot edit data in Y and X axis outside the graph/chart. I am able to edit data in the chart/ graph but not out side. Does anyone has a resolution?
