Error message: ‘the logon user interface DLL msgina.dll failed to load’

Hi!

I’m running windows 2000 pro SP4 with automatic updates on.
AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512mb RAM
ATI Radeon 7500 series GPU

I get the error message ‘the logon user interface DLL msgina.dll failed to load’ when I start my computer and wait for the login screen to appear – which fails to load. The message appears about 10 minutes later.

I can see my mouse pointer and move it, yet ctrl+alt+del has no effect.

Unfortunately I can’t find my Windows 2000 pro CD, but I downloaded a copy of MSGINA.DLL and replaced the apparently missing file, yet I still have the same problem. (I used a second HDD with an XP OS to copy the file).

The problem arose after one of my other HDD’s corrupted and after I updated my video card drivers.

From what I have read elsewhere on the internet, the problem often arises after a windows update or as a result of updating ATI video drivers (I presume the latter is therefore the most likely cause of problem). Unfortunately I can’t boot into safe mode (I get the ‘blue screen of death’ or STOP error screen) so I can’t update the driver that way.
I’ve tried the solution Micrsoft povides – use the ‘last known good configuration’ which didn’t make any difference.

I’m reluctant to just re-install my OS (and I can’t find the disk anyway!) and would rather try the fix the problem.

Many thanks,

Hadyn Williams
