Event Viewer Problem

I am having trouble accessing my event viewer. When I open it up it defaults to system log and everything looks fine. However, when I switch to the application log I can see that there are 884 entries but I cannot see any details for the entries. I checked and there is no filter on. Has this happened to anyone before. I cannot link this problem to any system changes and it has not affected any of my other machines. Has anyone had this or something similiar happen? I am running Windows Server 2000 SP 4 running on a Dell PE2400.
