excel display zero value

Excel:Tools/Options/display zero values is not checked. Works as expected EXCEPT a number string where the FIRST value is a negative does display the zero result, which I can’t format to hide. Rearranging the order of addition using a positive number first for the exact same string hides the zero result. I’ve never noticed this before. What gives?
