Excel opens but does not display spreadsheet

I am using Excel 2000. I have a file (xxxx.xls). I click on the file and excel opens but the spreadsheet for xxxx.xls does not appear. Only a black window. The only way to open the file is to go to ‘open’ and click on the file. Any ideas? It only happens on one computer so I think it is a setting but not sure.
