Excel won’t launch

Reinstalling didn’t help this but if I’m in Windows Explorer and double-click on an xls file, Excel opens but to a blank worksheet, so to speak. It is not actually a worksheet, it is just he gray background. Same problem if I double click on a desktop shorcut to xls file. If I click Open, then find the file, it opens fine.
