Exchange attachment size

I’m a Network Admin with Exchange 2000 responsibilities. My supervisor wants to know why sending a 10MB file over FTP is easy and sending a 10MB file through Exchange 2000 screws up the works. What does Exchange do with attachments that come throughthe mail server? Can anyone help?
