Experience, no certification or…

Dumb question? I’ve heard it said that it’s easy to get an IT certification and have no practicle experience. Since I have experience but no certification, (Been responsible for our network for 5 years), how adverse will it be getting a better job with experience only? I’ve read and read many certification study books. Are they really interested in base-level certification? Is it worth the time and money? Thanks.
