???firewall has blocked access……???

I am a personl computer user and I just installed a firewall (ZoneAlarm) to protect my personal computer from hacker attacks and also to se how this firewall worked. After instaling the software i started to get warnings from the firewall that certain IP addresses were tring to access my computer. What does this mean are people realy tring to access my computer?
