Forgot password/GRUB/RedHat Linux 7.2.4

I forgot my password. According to the instructions that I have, I need to boot the system as ‘linux single’ at the GRUB or LILO ‘boot:’ prompt. How do I stop GRUB while it’s running so that I can re-set my password.
