Ftp files

I saved a copy of an existing excel file to create another copy. I then placed the new file on my ftp site. The file will not open or it wants to go straight to download, instead of giving me an option of opening. I did not change any of permissions on the ftp site or on the excel file. Does anyone know what might have happened to the file?
