GNOME X Environment

Hi

I have question regarding starting the GNOME X environment in RedHat to administrate the LINUX.

I use the command startx to starting the GNOME X environment but the error said that: cannot open display.

it ask me a lots of questions likemy monitor type and brand, the video card brand and type …….lots of things.

It ask me about the
mouse protocol type, answer: PS/3 mouse
keyboard type: Standard 101-Key keyboard
monitor type with characteritics modes: my one is DELL E 550 but I can’t find from the list and i am not understand what is characteristics modes.
Video card: I am not so sure what video card am I use because when I open the Compaq Prosiginia 500 i found that all is integrated.
Type of server: In the list sthere are some server such as XF86_Mono Server,XF86_VGA16 server ……………….
Do you want me to set the symbolic link. I am not sure what is this means.
How much video memory do you have on your video card. This one i also not so sure.
Clockchip Line: i am not so sure what is this?
After that it asked me to reboot and when i reboot and use the commmand startx, i still can’t get into the GNOME X environment.

Please help me in order to get access to the GNOME X environment because Iam new user to LINUX and lots of commands i am not so familiar .
