Graphic Installer fail – X Server error

by deji . Updated 22 years, 6 months ago

Installed RedHat 8 (2.4.18-14) on IBM Netfinity 5k5 server with S3 Trio64V2 generic card. Anaconda correctly identifies the card, but monitor couldn’t get probed so monitor info was manually provided during text install mode(Hsync/vertrefresh/depth info is also correctly listed in XF86Config file output, although I have no idea what the Options: “dpms” line means).

Keyboard and PS/2 mouse (connected via a new BLACK BOX SW626A KVM box) works fine upon firstboot. However, the graphical installer fails with:
“Fatal Server Error: no screens found”, and
“XIO: Fatal IO Error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server “:0.0”

The KVM box works well with all other connected boxes, so I doubt that this is the problem. Although I’m new to Linux OS, I didn’t have this problem on a P-133 test box using the same setup scenario.

I am think this problem is limited to the X server configuration but puzzled as to what to do.
Thanks for your kind assistance with this pesty hiccup.
