Hard disk replacement

I would like to know if someone has a policy
or outlined procedure for replacement of
hard disks that contain sensitive data or proprietary info that must be sent back to mfg. for credit, or are upgraded by the mfg.
to a larger size disk and theyremove and retain the smaller disk ?
