Has anyone had success recovering deleted texts on Android?

I’ve tried most of the apps on the app store, all have failed except for one that required I root with kingoroot which isn’t working on Android 7.0 and one that stayed at 0% for 10 minutes before I gave up. I’ve tried many desktop apps as well and only one has given me a number of texts that it can restore before I pay $50. Has anyone ever successfully done it and if so what did you use?
