HD not recognized by O/S

Familiar Story. Laptop HD won’t boot, shows boot error. Removed from laptop to HD enclosure to try to remove data to another machine. HD is not reporting to the O/S (WinXP) Disk Management console. Is there any other way to gain access to the HD provided there is no physical damage?
