HDD to USB

Is it possible to convert HDD from
my old desktop into a portable USB storage device?
I remember reading somewhere that by encasing the HDD in suitable enclosure it can be used as portable storage device. If anyone knows how to go about it if at all it is possible please let me know. I have a 40GB HDD which i do not want to waste.
