Help me disable these ####ed automatic updates – Windows 10

I’ve read all the articles, and the solutions never work. I’ve tried disabling automatic updates via a downloaded gpedit.msc (I have Home edition), I’ve edited the registry, I get locked out of editing services.msc event with changing ownership, I’ve set to metered connection.

I don’t want there to be permanent stop to updates, but I want to update on my own terms, something that shouldn’t be controversial. Even postponing a week or so out, every week I have to go and remove a bunch of Windows bloatware that takes forever.

There has to be a way to pause these updates indefinitely. Can anyone help?
