Help my laptop wont boot to disk it just goes straight to startup repair?

Hi
My laptop is a bit messed up at the moment as I think the os has become corrupt at some point
Therefore I am trying to install a different version of windows onto it but every time I ask it to boot to disk it just goes to start up repair
Any ideas?
