My continuing problem started when I made the mistake of installing an Office 2000 upgrade on my PC. The problem is that Microsoft has changed their installation program so that if you have user profiles set up on your PC with per user menus and are running Windows 95 or 98, then all users must run Setup for Office 2000. If not, then none of the other users can run Office. Simply copying a pointer will not work anymore.
The Microsoft work around is to get rid of the user profiles & have everyone use the same menu. Otherwise, run setup for each & every user… (See article Q233529 on the Microsoft support site. It is listed among “Windows Installer Errors for Office 2000”.) There are no fixes in the works.
It gets better… Other vendors who utilize the Microsoft installation program run into the same problem. I ran into it with McAfee. Their solution was to contact Microsoft.
