How do I clear files waiting to be burned to a CD?

I have a CD-RW drive. Past projects are hanging up the drive. I can view/listen to a CD in the drive, but I cannot burn any files to it. I keep getting a message that files are waiting to be burned to the CD, but there are none. How do I have XP clear those files that it “thinks” are waiting to be written.
