How do I go from Systems Engineer to management?

Call it beating a dead horse. I’ve seen and read a number of articles talking about IT management and the like. What I’m hoping to find are some recommendations on making the leap from my current position as systems engineer to something in management. My heart is set on moving up the corporate IT ladder, but I know that it won’t happen at my current job. Am I doomed to making a lateral move to another company and hoping that in 5 years I can start moving up or are there other options? I have a BS in Information Technology and have a tiny bit of supervisory experience, but are all these companies seriously looking for 5 – 10 years of IT management experience just to get the foot in the door?
