how do I recover a forgotten windows password, without the password to the

Good afternoon folks,
Before I get into my question, let me explain a few things.
First of all, I am a blind individual, and I use screen access software to access the computer and associated software, and I do not use the mouse at all.
I do everything from the keyboard.
With that out of the way, Here’s my question.
A friend of mine approached me today and asked me if I knew how to recover a forgotten windows password.
He recently changed his windows password, and now he forgets what he set the password to.
It’s a laptop running Windows XP Home addition, without service pack 2 installed.
I was going to try safe mode, but I’ve got no sighted assistants to get into safe mode, and I am wondering if their’s another way to recover the password, short of reformatting the laptop, witch I do not want to do.
Any help would be appreciated.
Oh, FYI, their are no other accounts on the machine. Owner is the only username on the machine.
