how improve wireless reception from a hotspot

i’m receiving a weak and fluctuating wireless signal at a temporary residence. is there a way to improve strength and steadyness of signal to my toshiba satellite laptop? wireless router? antenna? I’m a novice. Any and all suggestions will be deeply appreciated!
