How reliable is DuckDuckGo for internet privacy protection?

Hi, I’ve been using DuckDuckGo for quite some time but I was wondering if they are true to their word and actually protect us from espionage. Are VPNs that specialize in privacy such as NordVPN and PureVPN still better alternatives?
