How to land the CIO role?

by penguinsrule . Updated 24 years ago

Greetings:
I’m a senior technical lead/project leader for a very large foreign company, and essentially I manage the production manufacturing systems, and I spend most of my time leading high level projects.
I have considered moving intothe CIO role. Unless something unforseen happens, our CIO will remain here, and due to the remote location I work in, it’s unlikely that I’ll have enough visibility for this to happen here.
Does anyone have an idea how best to move into the CIO role? I think I have a fairly good idea as to what the role entails. Obviously, I think that it is critical to be able to understand the business and show that IT adds value to the organization in a real clear manner. I think the primary questions for me is whether the role is a good fit for me personally, and how to go about going that direction if it is. From what I’ve seen things get nastier the higher you go, so it all depends on the quality of the people you will be working with andhow good of a fit there is.

Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks
